Bergen (Bergen)

Our guide to recently renovated and rather lovely Bergen station features a directory of links to useful local information and also explains how to connect to the city centre and airport.
All the station's facilities are grouped around its main concourse and all have step free access from/to the trains, so it's an exceptionally easy station to use.

Accessing The City Centre from Bergen's railway station

Bergen railway station is on the eastern edge of the city centre, but as Bergen is a small city, none of its a major attractions is more than a 20-25 min walk away from it
So fairly convenient in fine weather, but in Bergen it rains frequently.
This can be an issue, as the local bus network in Bergen doesn't directly serve the train station - and that's because the city's bus station is a couple of blocks to the south - far enough away for a drenching in bad weather.

Bergen's tram/light rail line does stop right by the station, the stop at Bergen station is named 'Nonneseter'.
The tram line has a stop adjacent to the heart of the city, named 'Byparken', but it's only a 6 -10 min walk from the station along the street named Kalgaten - keep the lake with the fountain on your left.

The excellent Kode Gallery complex is on the other side of the lake - only steps away from Bergen station.

Transferring between Bergen railway station and the Bryggen harbour side

The old town and stunning harbour area of Bryggen is a 15 - 25 min walk from Bergen station.
The harbour side buildings (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) provide the most often used images of Bergen

Directly opposite the station is a street named Maken - it looks like a side street and it bends away to the right.
It is to the right of a pretty grey and cream building - the gardens with a lake are off to the left of this building.

This street, Maken, is the quickest route to the Bryggen area of town from Bergen station - there are no direct buses between the station and Bryggen

The funicular up to Floyen, with its views over then city, is also in Bryggen.

Between Bergen Station and Bergen Airport

The Bergen tram/light rail now provides a direct and easy link between Bergen station and airport, the stop at Bergen station is named 'Nonneseter'.
The journey time to the airport from Bergen station by tram is around 40 mins.
Buy tickets at the ticket machine at the stop before boarding and then stamp your ticket in the machine when you are on the tram.

Convenient Hotels/Hostels

A combination of expensive taxi fares, frequently wet weather and lack of local bus links at Bergen station, tip the balance of staying within a 10 min walk of the station, but there are actually few hotels in the vicinity.

(The highest concentration of hotels in Bergen are in the heart of the city or in the Bryggen neighbourhood - and if you have luggage, you'll probably want to take a taxi to these areas).

These are the hotels that are within a 5 - 8 min walk of Bergen station.
