Euro 2024 By Train: München / Munich

Travelling by train is a good option for experiencing Euro 2024 from München / Munich, as the city's main railway station, München Hbf, is a hub for the entire European rail network thanks to more than two dozen international trains per day
Plus there are typically six ICE express trains per hour, which connect the city with destinations across Germany - eight of the other Euro 2024 host cities have direct trains to and from München / Munich.

There is no hiding that the Fußball Arena München / Allianz Arena is reminiscent of many North American stadiums, thanks to its edge of city location and numerous large car parks.
The public transport access is by the U-Bahn, which in Munich is a regular subway style network of underground trains.

Fröttmaning station which is on metro line U6 is around a 15 min walk to and from the stadium.
When heading to the Allianz Arena, use the footbridge at the northern end of the station to access the Esplanade, which has several footpaths which lead directly to the stadium.
On match days additional trains to and from the city centre provide a five minute frequency, because some trains are turned around at Fröttmaning - when heading off from the city centre, the regular trains will be heading to Garching.

In the city centre the U6 has stations at Marienplatz, Odeonsplatz and Sendlinger Tor.
The journey time between Marienplatz and Fröttmaning is 16 minutes.

Taking a train to Munich and connecting for the stadium

At Marienplatz connections are available with the local S-Bahn trains, which in Munich cross the city centre in a tunnel, so they are similar to the Elizabeth Line in London and the RER in Paris.
These S-Bahn trains connect Marienplatz to both the city's main rail station, München Hbf and the station named München Ost.
This is an additional station call to the east of the city centre used by most of the trains which travel between Austria and Munich.
The transfer, from stepping off a train at München Hbf to being at Fröttmaning station will take around 35 mins.

from the airport

The easiest public transport option for a transfer from Munich Airport to the Allianz Arena is to take a local S-Bahn train on line / route S8 to Marienplatz, and then connect there into the line 6 to Fröttmaning.

Match ticket holders are entitled to a 36 Hour Travel Pass for the entire MVV (Münchner Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund) network at no additional cost!
The network covers a vast area beyond Munich’s city borders, so you can discover the entire region by public transport.

If you will be happy to travel for 90 minutes each way in order to reach a fabulous destination, then München/Munich is a great location for exploring by train.

From the city’s main station, München Hbf, railways fan out in every direction across Bavaria, so by using a combination of a Bavarian Lander ticket and Regional (Regio) trains, which usually depart at least hourly, it’s possible to take multiple fabulous day trips at reasonable prices – particularly when two more people will be travelling together.

Easy access to other great cities

Another tick in the box for using München as a base for exploration is the variety of locations which can be easily accessed on those straightforward train journeys.
Other fabulous cities that can be reached on hourly Regio trains include Augsburg, Regensburg and Nürnberg/Nuremberg – and for those with a fascination for railways, while in Nurnberg, a visit to the DB Museum is a must.

Head for Alpine destinations on trains from Munich

Big city day trips can be mixed with travelling to a multitude of locations amidst stunning scenery, because München is located just to the north of the Bavarian Alps.
As a result beautiful Berchtesgaden is an easy day trip of under two hours, though a simple connection is required at Freilassing station.
Or head off on a two hour(ish) journey to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where the main station is steps away from the terminus of the Zugspitzebahn rack railway, which ascends up to Zugspitzplatt, the highest station in Germany.

Travel to fairytale castles by train from. Munich.

Another very popular location set within an Alpine landscape is Neuschwanstein Castle, to reach it take the train to Füssen, and connect there for the short bus ride on routes/lines 73 or 78 to the ‘Hohenschwangau Neuschwanstein Castles, Schwangau’ stop.

Neuschwanstein is not the only fairy tale castle of King Ludwig II that can be experienced by taking a train from Munchen hbf, because his Herrenchiemsee Palace can also be easily accessed by taking the train to Prien am Chiemsee and making the 10-15 min walk to the pier from where the boats head across the lake to the palace.
If you don’t want to see the palace then Prien am Chiemsee is a charming lakeside resort town, particularly worth heading to on a sunny day.

A day or two in Austria by train from Munich

The trains calling at Prien am Chiemsee will be heading over the Austrian border on route to Salzburg as this stunning city can be accessed in less than two hours by train from München/Munich.
Though if you want to take the faster Railjet trains it will pay off to book ahead.

Innsbruck is another wonderful city in Austria which can be accessed in under two hours from München by train.

If you won't have match tickets for games in the cities that you will be travelling to, the key things worth knowing about the usual tickets to travel on trains in Germany are:

• Tickets for the ICE and IC trains can be booked online and are already available for travel during the tournament.
• Tickets for the Regio and S-Bahn trains can be purchased at the station on the day of travel, but if you don't specify that you want to travel by ICE or IC train, you won't be able to travel by those other train services - so you can't just hop on the next train to depart.
• Because tickets booked last minute at the station for travel by the IC and ICE trains will be more expensive than those which can be used on the Regio and S-Bahn trains.
• Discounted tickets, branded 'Sparpreis' and the cheaper 'Super Sparpreis', are made available for travel on the ICE and IC trains - the further in advance of the travel date that they are booked, the cheaper they will be.
• Up to four children aged 6 to 14 can travel with for free of charge with someone aged 15 and over who has purchased either type of Sparpreis ticket
• Those aged 15 and older pay the adult rate and there is no charge for those aged 5 and under.
• Those aged 65 and over can travel at a discounted rate.

Those with match tickets are able to access a special type of ticket, the DB Ticket Euro 2024 for travel by ICE and IC train to the host city of the corresponding game - the train conductor will ask to see the rail ticket and the match ticket.
Though the tickets have limited availability per departure, so for the widest possible choice of trains, it will be best to book as far in advance as possible.
The key plus of these tickets is that they have a flat rate price for a one-way trip of €29.90 in 2nd class and €39.90 in 1st class; so when the cheapest prices of both types of Sparpreis tickets have sold out, these Euro 2024 tickets obviously become the cheapest option.

If when looking up a journey on DB there are tickets available at a cheaper price than €29.90 in 2nd class and €39.90 in 1st class, they will be offered as an alternative.
Though during the tournament the prices for the longer journeys from and to Munich will otherwise likely be more than €100 - so these DB Ticket Euro 2024's will likely be significant money savers.

seat reservations

The 1st class tickets include a seat reservation, which otherwise costs €5.90, but seat reservations are not included when booking the 2nd class DB Ticket Euro 2024 tickets - and a 2nd class seat reservation has an additional charge of €4;90.
If you don't reserve it will be possible to board a train with a 2nd class DB Ticket Euro 2024 ticket to find that no seats are available.
Note that once you factor in the reservation, the additional cost of a 1st class DB Ticket Euro 2024 ticket is only €5-6 - for longer journeys this extra cost will be worth every cent!

München / Munich is some distance from all of the other Euro2024 host cities, but the 100s of ICE trains which arrive and depart from München Hbf each day, ensure that the journey times can often be shorter than you may assume.

The German national rail operator, DB, will be operating more than a dozen additional ICE trains per day, during the tournament and a swathe of these will be travelling from and to München / Munich.

If you will be travelling direct to the Olympiastadion the local S-Bahn trains on lines S3 and S9 link Berlin Hbf with the stadium every 10 minutes - and the journey time is under 20 mins.

During Euro 2024 there will be additional late night train in both directions:

• to Berlin from München Hbf at 21:51, though this train takes the longer route via Stuttgart and Frankfurt; and at 00:21 - this train takes the faster route via Nurnberg.
• from Berlin Hbf to München / Munich at 23:56.

When heading to Cologne to attend matches at the RheinEnergieStadion there are two train travel options:
1 - take trains to Köln-Messe Deutz to connect for tram line 1;
2 - take trains to Köln-Hbf, connect for trains, on lines S12 and S19 to Weiden West station and transfer there to a line 1 tram.

During Euro 2024 there will be additional late night train in both directions:

• to Cologne / Köln from München Hbf at 19:28, though the final ICE train of the day departs at 00:01
• from Köln Hbf to München / Munich at 21:55.

During the day, between 08:00 and 19:00 there are up to 3 x ICE trains per hour from München / Munich to Dortmund and the journey times range from around 5hr 35mins to around 5hr 55mins.
The train which typically departs at 15:47 is best avoided as it takes a longer, but more scenic, route - so has a a journey tie of over 7 hours.
During the tournament there will be an additional train at 19:28, but there will be later departures from München Hbf at 20:48 and 00:01.

Some of the trains, those which don't travel via Berlin, call at Hamburg-Harburg station before they arrive in Hamburg city centre.
If you will be travelling direct to the Volksparkstadion a good option can be leaving the train when it arrives in Hamburg-Harburg station and connecting there for local S-Bahn trains on lines S3 and S5 to Stellingen - shuttles buses connect Stellingen station to the stadium.

During Euro 2024 there will be additional late night train in both directions:

• to Hamburg from München Hbf at 00:21 - this train takes the faster route via Nurnberg.
• be departing Hamburg-Hbf at 22:28 - this train will commence its journey at Hamburg Hbf.

Stuttgart is the closest other Euro 2024 host city to München / Munich and the two cities are linked by one of Germany's most frequent services of express trains.

During the tournament there will be multiple additional trains departing München Hbf at 19:23, 20:43, 20:51 and 01:29
Though there will also also be a regularly timetabled train departing at 00:01.

How to travel on to the MHP Arena / Stuttgart Arena.

A similar frequency of 2 to 3 x ICE trains per hour travels in the opposite direction from Stuttgart Hbf to Munich.
During the tournament there will be additional late night departures at 00:18 and 02:20.
